We continue to add new books to our shelves. Click on the New in January link above to see the entire list. We also keep a list of books recently donated to the library. Find the list in the red notebook in the New Fiction bookcase.

Last July the Shawnee Library System, which provides our interlibrary loan services, became part of the Illinois Heartland Library System. The IHLS covers the area south of a line stretching roughly between Quincy and Kankakee. This new association will greatly expand our patrons’ access to books ordered through inter-library loan. The new library system was created in response to the severe budget cuts which Illinois is experiencing. Combining four smaller library systems (including the former Shawnee Library System) will save on administrative costs and help Illinois libraries to survive this difficult financial crisis. However, individual libraries are now required to take on substantial costs that were formerly borne by the library systems and the State of Illinois. This has reduced the funds we have available for books and programs. If you or your business would like to help out with a monetary donation to the Library, please contact the Library Director or a member of the Library Board of Trustees.

The Library welcomes volunteers to help with various projects and activities. If you would like to volunteer, please stop by the Library and let us know your how you'd like to participate.

Don’t forget to check out our new Useful Links page to find links to websites of government agencies, maps, information on genealogy and health, books to read online, and access free college courses through the OpenCourseWare program.

If you have a new baby, please stop by the Library to receive a free “welcome to the world” book for your child. The Library also has a group of books chosen specifically for the first year of a child’s life, one book per month. Come to the Library and look for the Leading to Reading display in the Children’s Corner – then check out one of these books to read to your baby! Further information about Leading to Reading is available at the Library. Or you can read more at www.Leading2Reading.com, where the program is expanded to include monthly reading suggestions for the entire first five years of life.
